Nurturing emotions: the importance of children’s mental health

Taking care of children’s mental health is just as important as taking care of their physical health. At Bibliotech, we believe that emotional well-being is the foundation that allows children to learn, connect, and develop fully. A child who feels heard, safe, and valued has more tools to face everyday challenges.

Children’s mental health

Children’s mental health refers to their ability to recognize, express, and manage their emotions, as well as to relate to others in a healthy way. It is not about them always being happy, but about being able to understand what they feel and knowing that their emotions are valid.

A stable and nurturing environment plays a key role. When children grow up in spaces where open communication and respect are encouraged, they develop greater emotional security and self-confidence. This directly influences their behavior, their learning, and the way they interact with the world.

The importance of validating emotions

Every child is unique, with different rhythms and needs. That is why validating their emotions is essential. Listening without minimizing what they feel and helping them name their emotions teaches them to better understand themselves and express themselves in a healthy way.

Validating does not mean agreeing with everything, but rather offering emotional support and guiding them as they learn to manage frustration, anger, or sadness appropriately. This ongoing guidance strengthens their self-esteem and their ability to resolve conflicts.

Emotional health and learning

Emotional well-being is closely linked to the learning process. Children who feel emotionally secure are better able to concentrate, actively participate, and relate positively with their peers. According to UNICEF, mental health in childhood directly influences cognitive, social, and emotional development throughout life.

For this reason, education is not only about transmitting knowledge, but also about teaching children to recognize emotions, fostering empathy, and creating spaces where they feel supported.

Small actions that make a big difference at home

Everyday gestures such as establishing clear routines, spending quality time talking, and respecting moments of rest help children feel safe and supported. A predictable environment gives them emotional stability and allows them to move through daily life with greater confidence.

It is also important to lead by example. When adults express their emotions in a healthy way, listen attentively, and resolve conflicts with respect, children learn to do the same. Supporting them does not mean having all the answers, but being emotionally present and available.

In a world where values are constantly changing, teaching children the importance of community service becomes an essential tool to help them grow into empathetic, caring, and socially aware individuals. Involving them in activities that benefit others not only allows them to contribute to their community but also helps them develop skills and values that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Learning to Look Beyond Oneself

Community service gives children the opportunity to step outside their daily environment and see reality from a new perspective. Taking part in social, environmental, or charitable projects helps them realize that every action, no matter how small, makes a difference.

Setting clear goals: the first step towards success

When students learn to set realistic and achievable goals, they strengthen their sense of responsibility and autonomy. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), setting specific goals increases motivation and persistence in learning. These goals don’t have to be big: they can range from improving in a subject to dedicating a few extra minutes to daily study. What matters is that they are measurable and meaningful for the student.

Exploring new areas of interest

Encouraging the curiosity of children and young people opens the door to discovering talents they may not yet know. It is of utmost importance to clarify the planning of tasks in order to meet the objectives. The objectives we have will help us to plan the didactic sequences correctly. Likewise, it will help to obtain the contents that the teacher wishes to teach accurately. It is essential to have an in-depth understanding of the tasks, the subjects to be taught, the physical ages and maturity to achieve the acquisition and formation of the teaching judgments.

Planned education is established through the organization of plans and study programs for the subjects that encompass the different curricula. Consequently, the plans and study programs are a phenomenal guide for the tutor to ensure that students have learned effectively, taking into consideration the cognitive and specific skills to be addressed with each student.

When talking about the alignment of teaching, learning, and student assessment, other factors must be identified, such as the type of modality: virtual or face-to-face.

There are several reasons why student learning is compromised. One of them is the excessive importance of exams. It is clear that one of the main goals is the numerical measurement of the results that students achieve in a test or didactic exercise. In this case, the measurement must be conceptualized as an inclusive factor that does not only cover the score, as this score can sometimes be affected by exogenous or endogenous changes such as lack of sleep, diet, problems in interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, among others.

On the other hand, if the obtained measurement is not as expected, it can be observed how parents and unprepared teachers take a negative and unfavorable judgment towards the student. This can cause rejection, anger, lack of self-confidence, and frustration on the part of the student towards studying. Additionally, it can have repercussions on the diagnostic formation and evaluation of knowledge.

The use of exams, partials, and tests is important for verifying knowledge. However, it should not be the final goal of learning as it generates a high peak of stress and the creation of stressful stimuli. If the evaluation is brief, it ends up reflecting little information. Similarly, the brain needs constant training and focus to work on neural connections.

Here are some important data about learning:

Learning must be autonomous and punctual.
Ideally, it should promote student motivation towards participation and execution of learning.
It should be challenging; the brain learns through repetition and effort.
It should provide feedback that is direct, fast, and dialogic.
The teacher should be prepared, committed, and participatory in teaching with empathy and passion.
The evaluation should reflect the real performance capacity and progress of the student being evaluated.
If the incorporation of changes and/or modifications is necessary, it should be done in such a way that cognitive skills are not affected.
There should be psychopedagogical knowledge among the teaching staff.

The learning process not only depends on the quality of information that the student receives, but also takes into consideration the factors that influence the comprehensive educational cognitive process. Regarding learning, the emotional factor tends to be ignored, later becoming a trigger that negatively impacts the student's academic formation .

Both educators and parents must work together with the aim of prioritizing emotions and feelings as a whole. Emotions are imperative and natural within all human beings. So, why are they treated as two separate terms?

Among the advantages of working hand in hand in emotional education, it has been identified that the management and control of emotions influence the learning process and daily performance. It is constantly observed that the poorer the management of frustration, anger, and stress, the more it affects the performance that one can have in different areas of life.

Among emotions, self-confidence, enthusiasm, curiosity, optimism, hopefulness, and satisfaction provide tools that can be used for better academic performance because they favor learning. Meanwhile, stress, anxiety, worry, and emotions related to jealousy, betrayal, disappointment, insecurity, and rejection are a disadvantage when it comes to being able to react assertively to daily life events.

Through understanding emotions, students learn how to manage what they feel in order to give them a sense of understanding where that feeling originates from, enabling them to handle attitudes in class towards their tutors and classmates.

On the other hand, a positive and empathetic environment in the classroom is significant. If the school environment is hostile, critical, and attacking, there are more chances that the student's performance and learning will be less favored.

A teacher with an empathetic attitude is a likeness of how the students under their care will be. It is of utmost importance to provide strategies and techniques for problem-solving in personal, social, and family life, not only in academic life, so that the student receives quality education. At Bibliotech, we not only focus on teaching the required subjects to the student but also promote their personal growth and human developement .

Activity to promote the work of executive functions and cognitive skills (attention and concentration):

Assemble a puzzle with time to try to complete it as quickly as possible. The puzzle must be assembled from memory.

First, the puzzle must already be assembled, which will be visualized for 15 seconds. Then, the pieces will be moved in order for it to assembled again. In this activity, it is necessary to time it so that we can identify how long it takes for the kid to complete it. This activity will work on visualization, memory, and motor skills.

To achieve a second level, the same dynamics can be performed by also adding visual or auditory distractions: While doing the puzzle, one can listen to music, watch a program, perform mathematical operations, or be accompanied by another person who will be moving the pieces. Doing two activities at the same time will help with guided, sustained attention, and detail. Likewise, the attention span of the students will influence their ability to maintain concentration on the tasks assigned.

Activity to promote the work of executive functions and cognitive skills (processing speed, divided attention, sustained and selective attention):

This activity will be done in pairs. For this game, cardboard letters, a set of letters, or printed letters will be needed.

With a partner, the letters will be randomly divided. One of them will start by choosing a letter. After a letter is chosen, the other person must choose another, and so on. Both people must make a word together. The game should be as fast as possible. Lik.ewise, this activity should be timed. This activity will influence the student's ability to perform school and homework tasks more quickly and effectively.
